European Conference on ADHD in Adults. Oslo 2003

Slowly over the years AD/HD became recognized in adults, and studies have been done in several countries, mostly in USA. In Norway a systematic study on adults started in 1997. This study is being analysed right now, and the results will be presented at the end of this year.

An Exploration Into the Creative Abilities of

Children With ADHD

The purpose of this study is to explore whetherADHD is associated with high creative ability. Sixty-seven children, ages 10 to12 (33 ADHD and34controls) completed the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT), Maier’s Two String Problem, andthe Block Design and Vocabulary subsets of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III). The results show that

there is no significant difference between the ADHD group’s and control group’s performance on either the TTCT, Maier’sTwo-String Problem, or WISC-III, suggesting that children diagnosed withADHD are no more creative than children withoutthe diagnosis. (J. of Att. Dis. 2005;8(3), 88-95)

Attention Disorder: Overcoming the Deficit
Abuse of Attention Deficit Drug Can Be Deadly

In ADHD, brain areas ruling attention and inhibition don't work very well. Most children with ADHD are inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive. In teenagers, the hyperactivity often quiets to a restlessness. For some, paying attention is their biggest problem. Others are mainly impulsive and hyperactive.

Psychopharmacology for ADHD in Adolescents: Quo Vadis?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a fascinating condition that has perplexed clinicians, researchers, parents and patients for a long time. Research indicated that management of ADHD in children and adolescents should emphasize a multimodal approach, with attention to proper school placement, appropriate psychological therapy and, in many situations, psychopharmacology. This review focuses on the medications that have been noted to provide benefit to adolescents with ADHD.

Standards for Screening Test Construction

Screening test construction involves both traditional and unique psychometry. Nevertheless, screens should adhere to standards for any other educational and psychologist test including evidence of:

The Conceptualization and Role of Impulsivity: Bipolar Disorder and Substance Abuse

Impulsivity is a prominent characteristic of both bipolar disorder (BD) (Swann et al., 2003, 2001) and substance abuse disorder (SA) (Moeller and Dougherty, 2002). Furthermore, the comorbidity of BD with SA is a well-documented pattern of psychiatric presentation (e.g., Krishnan, 2005). The strength of this association has been attributed to common underlying biobehavioral processes of impulsivity in BD and SA (Dougherty et al., 2004; Swann et al., 2004). However, each of these psychiatric conditions may also involve separate aspects of impulsivity (Moeller et al., 2001), which underscores the necessity for assessment of multiple characteristics of both trait-dependent and state-dependent impulsive behavior to truly appreciate the contribution of impulsivity to BD and SA (Dougherty et al., 2003b).

The Dangers of Ritalin and similar drugs

The following articles are only the tip of the iceberg. Using "Ritalin" as a search word turned up 54,700 references. Most of these cite known dangers. Halfway down is the information on the lawsuit against the Ritalin makers. At the bottom of this page are still more links to web sites citing the dangers of Ritalin and other psychotropic drugs. Every parent who has an ADD/ADHD child, and is considering the use of Ritalin (or other generic type drugs) should read all the information FIRST!

Identifying and treating attention déficit hyperactivity disorder: A resource for school and home

We have all had one of these experiences at one time or another. Perhaps it was at the grocery store, watching frustrated parents call their children’s names repeatedly and implore them to “put that down.” Maybe it was a situation at school with a child who could not seem to sit still and was always in motion. Maybe we noticed a child who appears always to be daydreaming in class—the student who will not focus on an activity long enough to finish it. Possibly the child is bored with a task, seemingly as soon as it has begun, and wants to move on to something else. We all puzzle over these challenging behaviors.

Iron and ADHD

Iron plays a role in the regulation of dopaminergic activity. In the present study, nonanemic children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were evaluated with regard to heme and nonheme iron metabolism and the effect of short-term iron administration on behavior. The study group consisted of 14 boys aged 7-11 years. All first underwent testing to rule out other psychiatric and medical problems. The severity of the ADHD symptoms was determined by parent and teacher scores on the Connors Rating Scale. Thereafter, each patient received an iron preparation (Ferrocal), 5 mg/kg/day for 30 days. Blood samples were taken before and after drug administration. Results showed a significant increase in serum ferritin levels (from 25.9 +/- 9.2 to 44.6 +/- 18 ng/ml) and a significant decrease on the parents' Connors Rating Scale scores (from 17.6 +/- 4.5 to 12.7 +/- 5.4). There were no changes in other blood parameters or in the teachers' scores on the rating scale. The effect of iron supplementation on the behavioral and cognitive symptoms in noniron-deficient ADHD children merits further investigation using a placebo-controlled study.
